Thompson Italian deserves every bit of this 5-star rating. Food, atmosphere, service - all were superb. My wife and I haven't had a meal this enjoyable in months, we will absolutely be back! The best thing I can say is that my wife is vegetarian and usually has about 3 choices on any given menu, including a garden salad and a fried appetizer. TI has a plethora of vegetarian options that appeal to omnivores as well (although the ricotta cavatelli with spicy sausage is 🤌🤌🤌🤌🤌🤌🤌). Don't hesitate to check this place out.

Can’t wait to come back here again. The waitstaff was very friendly and the food was delicious. I had the tagliatelle with the lamb shank ragú and I’m glad I ordered it. My girlfriend ordered the gnocchi with black truffle and mushrooms and those mushrooms were insanely good. I kept eating some off of her plate they were that good. For starters we had the roasted garlic bread which is possibly the best garlic bread I’ve had, and we also ordered the brussel sprouts which were pretty good as well.

The food at Thompson Italian is really wonderful. The octopus starter was citrusy and creamy - a bit rich and the octopus a bit rubbery. The pasta is made in house and cooked to perfection with just the right amount of bite. The bolognese has complex flavors but nothing overpowering. It’s a heavy dish but the proportions were just right. The olive oil cake was really wonderfully light which was a nice end to a rich dinner. The pistachio gelato was deliciously nutty and not sweet, at all! Delightful! It has a “grandmothers Italian table” feel to the presentation without being family style/buffet. The service was good, not great. I’ll definitely come again! Such a great place to come if you’re ever in Falls Church!

My husband and I had dinner here and thought the food was really good. We would eat here again if we were in the neighborhood. We had the spicy pork meatballs for our appetizer with bread. For our main dishes we had the rigatoni and tagliatelle. Both were solid, delicious dishes. I don't remember the name of the dessert we ordered, but it was beautiful and delicious. The reason why I gave the restaurant 4 stars, is because we enjoyed the bread and appetizer more than our main dishes and the mixed drinks we ordered were just ok. Overall, this was a good food experience and I would recommend giving this place a try.

The bread here is absolutely amazing. They have fun drinks and the food is also great. I didn't have one dish I didn't like. My favorite dish was the Tagliatelle. I would definitely go back.

I visited early on a Saturday evening to round out a recent tour of eight of Northern Virginia Magazine’s Top Ten restaurants. Room at the 13-seat bar was plentiful as early as I went with more traffic arriving soon afterwards. The barkeep on duty greeted me promptly and cordially. Over the course of two hours, my experience ended up consisting of their white wine spritzer for an opening drink, the spicy pork meatball appetizer, their octopus appetizer, the squid ink pasta with scallops and pancetta, the pork chop entree, berry tiramisu, and scoops of vanilla gelato, passion fruit and peach sorbets. Timing of my food courses initially was lightning quick for the appetizers and then settled into a more normal rhythm for the others. For whatever reason, I was not offered bread service nor explained any specials (I learned from a pair sitting next to me later in the evening who did receive both as they ordered.) The drink had a bitter aftertaste, and I probably should have said something rather than hoping the taste would improve. (My rudimentary Spanish told me the barkeep checked with another bar team member for the mixing ratios for my drink before serving.) The plain aperol spritz I subsequently ordered tasted much better. The restrained portion of meatballs were spicy as advertised, texturally pleasing, and well balanced with the herbs and red sauce base — a satisfying start to be sure. The octopus was a highlight and worth an additional splurge. The eggplant purée was wonderfully flavorful on its own, but the farro and vegetables provided both earthiness and brightness against well portioned and cooked octopus. The squid ink pasta arrived thermally hot and predictable cooked perfectly as were the scallops so much so I cannot recall having more than one occasion of having scallops as tender and delightful to eat as these morsels. I found the pancetta adding a touch too much saltiness in this dish, but overall I was more than pleased with selecting this offering. The pork chop was cooked fine enough but for some reason seemed a little over salted for my taste. The polenta had a good consistency. I would like to have exchanged the chorizo element for more peach flavor if I could. In fact I would have liked to have tasted a bowl of the peaches with some vanilla gelato as a mini-dessert. Speaking of dessert, the tiramisu (had a look of a trifle as well to me) had predictably smooth flavors from a layer of cream and mousse. The presentation could be a little more refined seeing the layers drift into each other on the side of the cup (I can hear Mary Berry talking about even layers.) Finally the cookies and the passion fruit sorbets were great ways to end my meal. The vanilla gelato was good too, while the peach sorbet had a more subtle flavor than what I would have liked. In hindsight I think going with the classic olive oil cake offering might have been a better choice for me. The meal totaled just over $150 without tax and tip which represents what two people might typically consume over two hours here as I did. Clearly pastas reign supreme, so anyone should leave here knowing how pasta and its accompanying proteins can taste at their best. Other pastas would be almost certainly be worth sampling as well as a classic dessert or two. Putting aside some finer points from my perspective one can see why this place has the reputation it does.

It's a cute restaurant with ample seating and a small patio out back as well. The apps and pasta were great! Can't complain about al dente pasta. I would say the portions are medium to small, so it's a bit pricey considering that. Definitely a nice spot for a drink and pasta!

All of our food was fantastic. The menu is small, but there was plenty of variety. The portions lean on the smaller side but definitely enough still. The garlic bread and meatball appetizers were fantastic. We were a large group with a reservation and had an additional person show up, but they still managed to find space for all of us. Definitely a good date spot or if you’re looking for a slightly classier dinner location. Giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because while the food was delicious, it wasn’t the best Italian food I’ve had in the area. With that said, I would still eat here again.
