John's is the place to go when you want comfort food and carbs really, really don't count. Everything we ordered was wonderful once we made the decision to throw all dietary restrictions out the window. I particularly liked the pickled okra atop the mac and cheese - perfect pairing! We were slightly underwhelmed with the drink choices but what they did have was well prepared.

Stumbled across this gem randomly when plans changed, and thank goodness I did! Style and decor was eclectic and personally gave me a unique urban-type feel. Friendly staff, their cocktails unique and refreshing, and for my first time having chicken & waffles, did not disappoint one bit! Portion size was off the charts, I could’ve definitely it :) Ended the night with bread pudding, and man oh man, was it delectable! Definitely coming back if I’m ever in the area again!

Really good food and nice evening for a Thursday night bite to eat. We had the meatloaf and seared porkcop. For the price of food, the ambiance should of been better. The pork belly starter was tasty but not for the price and portion. ($14). In a nutshell, if we pass thru Birmingham again and hungry, we'd stop back.

Looked up down town restaurants, but also wanted to taste good southern food. This was IT! The service was amazing! Two different servers took the time to tell us more about Birmingham, being from the North West we just knew we were in the South. Our server said that all the produce and meat was fresh and from local farmers! Yes! Everything we ordered was amazing! We had fresh fried okra, 3 little pigs Mac and cheese, pork chop, and dark chocolate bread pudding. Prepare to have a party in you mouth. You won't regret you stopped by.

Absolutely incredible meal! Service was top notch and so welcoming. Started with an old school old Forrester old fashioned and pimento cheese with warmed toast. Sooooo good. Highly recommend the Asian Chicken & Waffles! Crystallized ginger waffle, fried chicken with soy maple syrup, black sesame seeds, cilantro & scallion. Hubby had a HUGE pork chop with mashed potatoes & gravy.

We were traveling to Atlanta and stopped in downtown Birmingham after the lunch rush. The dinner was clean with a pleasant atmosphere. The waiter gave us his suggestions for lunch and then stepped back and let is choose. My husband had the meatloaf, smashed potatoes with mushroom brown gravy. He stated it was good but could have used a little onion or green pepper for flavor. I had the pork chop dinner. The chop was well seasoned, the smashed sweet potatoes were tasty and the garlic sauteed spinach was fantastic. All for about $20 each. The waiter was nice and engaged us in conversation.

Great place in the heart of Birmingham. The food was delicious, but the portions are a little small. So if you are super hungry you might need to add an appetizer like I did ;). The waiter was a little slow, but I have seen far worth at other places. Overall a good place to go.

Used to eat at John’s City Diner often for lunch back in the 1990's, but had not been since they reopened after closing temporarily for COVID-19. Love the new decorations, friendly staff and great comfort food - a downtown Birmingham classic!
